Most articles about immigration, Republican, Democrat, Libertarian and Communist, including this one, begin with this as a given, "The United States immigration system is broken." But when you look through the 10 points, you see the current law isn't being followed or enforced, so why would the next one?

A story in the Washington Post highlights a number of times the Obama administration was warned of the growing crisis on the border. For instance, a 2012 report by the Women's Refugee Commission spelled out the growing number of unaccompanied minors at the border which started in the fall of 2011. Why did they wait for it to be a crisis? Cloward-Piven, anyone?

Thirty Border Patrol agents were assigned in August 2013 to drive the children to off-site showers, wash their clothes and make them sandwiches. As soon as those children were placed in temporary shelters, more arrived. An average of 66 were apprehended each day on the border and more than 24,000 cycled through Texas patrol stations in 2013. In a 41-page report to the Department of Homeland Security, the team from the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) raised alarms about the federal government’s capacity to manage a situation that was expected to grow worse. . .

“There were warning signs, operational folks raising red flags to high levels in terms of this being a potential issue,” said one former senior federal law enforcement official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to talk candidly about internal operations.

It’s not that Obama is incompetent or dumb.  But the alternative is much more serious.

“Before the 1994 Republican takeover, Democrats had sixty years of virtually unbroken power in Congress - with substantial majorities most of the time. Can a group of smart people, studying issue after issue for years on end, with virtually unlimited resources at their command, not come up with a single policy that works? Why are they chronically incapable?”  The author announced this warning in 2008—before Obama was in office.

Why?  Cloward-Piven and the manufactured crisis.

OBAMA: “ As I was getting a tour of DreamWorks, I didn't ask, but just looking at faces, I could tell there were some folks who are here not because they were born here, but because they want to be here and they bring extraordinary talents to the United States. And that's part of what makes America special. And that's part of what, by the way, makes California special, because it's always been this magnet of dreamers and strivers. And people coming from every direction saying to themselves, you know, if I work hard there I can have my piece of the American Dream.”

Of course, the immigrant workers of DreamWorks are not those who are sneaking across the borders.  Our 1996 immigration law would forbid DreamWorks from hiring them. Not even a janitor or grounds person would be hired without a green card or suitable documentation.

A few years ago I was at a birthday party, standing beside a stranger with dark skin and black hair who had a slight accent.  Not wanting to be rude, I didn't pounce and say "I see you are an immigrant here to bring us special talents," but eventually I found out he was Iranian born with a successful business that hired Mexican illegals because they were such hard workers, and wouldn't report him for fear of deportation.

"It is estimated the federal cost of incarcerating criminal aliens — Bureau of Prison's cost to incarcerate criminals and reimbursements to state and local governments under SCAAP — totaled approximately $5.8 billion for calendar years 2001 through 2004. BOP's cost to incarcerate criminal aliens rose from about $950 million in 2001 to about $1.2 billion in 2004 — a 14 percent increase. Federal reimbursements for incarcerating criminal aliens in state prisons and local jails declined from $550 million in 2001 to $280 million in 2004, in a large part due to a reduction in congressional appropriations. At the state level, the 50 states received reimbursement for incarcerating about 77,000 criminal aliens in fiscal year 2002 and 47 states received reimbursement for incarcerating about 74,000 in fiscal year 2003. For the 5 states incarcerating about 80 percent of these criminal aliens in fiscal year 2003, about 68 percent incarcerated in mid-year 2004 reported that the country of citizenship or country of birth as Mexico, the Dominican Republic, or Cuba. Four of these 5 states spent about $1.6 billion to incarcerate criminal aliens reimbursed through SCAAP during fiscal years 2002 and 2003. Estimates are that the federal government reimbursed these four states about 25 percent or less of the estimated cost to incarcerate these criminal aliens in fiscal years 2002 and 2003."

“Skin color deeply affects the way the one million migrant workers residing in Korea are treated. Those from China, Vietnam, the Philippines and some African countries generally hold low-paying, labor-intensive jobs in and around industrial complexes and are looked down upon, while white North Americans are usually welcomed as English teachers and business consultants.

"As a minority in Korea, I welcome Obama, a minority in the U.S.," said Maung Zaw, 39, a Myanmarese democracy activist who recently received refugee status in Korea.

"I don't think the U.S. and the world will change overnight after Obama comes to power. But I trust this is a symbol, opening doors for minorities in the long term."

Seeing Obama in the White House will also be an inspiration to the many North Korean defectors for whom political representation is still a long way off. . . “

“My expectations from Obama are that...we North Koreans are a minority here but some of us can also become lawmakers and politicians some day," said Kim Yoon-hee, 30, a Hankuk University of Foreign Studies professor who defected from North Korea in 2000. "Why shouldn't we? There's no law that prohibits us."

Obama has said he is willing to meet North Korean leader Kim Jong-il in person, and was generally seen as being more able to successfully help the reclusive state rejoin the international community than his hardline Republican rival John McCain. But McCain still enjoyed support from older North Korean defectors who perceived Obama as too naive to handle Pyongyang's nuclear brinkmanship.”
